I searched google maps and you'll most likely be driving right through Nashville, TN, and there's plenty to do there. If you are not interested in taking the time to take a tour (which you most likely wouldn't, since you are on a road trip), you might want to check out the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Belle Meade Plantation, or Belmont Mansion.

Also, Atlanta is a great city that you'll probably drive through. My personal favorite there is the CNN Center, though the city is also home to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, Atlanta History Center, the Wren's Nest, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Of course, for both of the above cities, you can visit the state capitol buildings. It's a fantastic way to learn a lot about an unfamiliar state in a short amount of time, and they generally don't cost a lot (if anything).

Definitely look up things to do in other cities along your way, too. Keep in mind that you do have a destination, so maybe look through these links and just pick 1-3 stops along the way.

Mammoth Cave! I loved this place when I was a kid, and have since returned with friends who, in turn, loved it too. I personally am a bit claustrophobic, but at no point did I feel uncomfortable on the main tour (the caverns are absolutely enormous, and many of the rooms are several stories tall). The main tour is entirely on foot, no climbing or squeezing through cracks. There are also more in-depth tours, however, and some require quite an adventurous spirit and waist size restrictions (!).

Edit: If you enjoy military stuff, you'll also like the Patton Museum. It's a large collection of tanks and other armor located at Fort Knox. Lots of big cool machines.
